Delivering consistent, high-quality asphalt output under extreme desert conditions, our 120 TPH drum mix plant was engineered and commissioned for a major road infrastructure project in North Africa — meeting full rated capacity from the very first day of commercial operation.

Customer Requirement

A road construction company in North Africa secured a significant highway development contract as part of a national infrastructure expansion initiative. The project demanded a dependable, high-output asphalt plant capable of sustained continuous operation in extreme arid conditions — with ambient temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C and fine desert dust posing a constant threat to plant components and filtration systems.

The customer required a plant that could:

•       Deliver consistent mix quality at 120 TPH without interruption across long daily shifts

•       Withstand severe desert heat and abrasive fine-particle dust environments

•       Be commissioned rapidly to meet tight project mobilisation deadlines

•       Operate with a minimal on-site technical team, requiring intuitive controls and low maintenance

Our Solution

After reviewing the project requirements and site conditions, we recommended our 120 TPH asphalt drum mix plant — a proven continuous-type production system well-suited to large-scale highway work requiring uninterrupted throughput. The drum mix design, which mixes and dries aggregates simultaneously in a single rotating drum, eliminates the downtime associated with batch-cycle operations, making it particularly well-matched to the customer's demanding production schedule.

Prior to finalising the order, the customer's technical team visited our manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, for a detailed factory inspection. They also reviewed references from existing long-term customers operating in comparable arid and high-temperature environments. This site-visit process gave them full confidence in the plant's build quality and our team's after-sales support capabilities.

To address the specific demands of the North African environment, we incorporated the following adaptations:

•       Desert-rated burner configuration for stable combustion performance in extreme ambient heat

•       Enhanced thermal insulation on the drum shell to maintain consistent internal temperatures despite high external temperatures

•       Heavy-duty bag filter system with increased filtration area to manage the fine silica-rich dust prevalent in arid environments

•       Sealed and dust-protected electrical panels and control systems

Shipping & Installation

The complete plant was packed and shipped in 6 containers, carefully engineered for efficient loading to manage international logistics costs while protecting all components during transit. Our experienced installation and commissioning team was deployed to the project site in North Africa, where they managed the full scope of assembly, structural alignment, and system commissioning.

The installation was completed in approximately 20 days, accounting for the additional time required for desert-environment-specific calibration of the burner system and dust suppression controls. Trial runs were conducted across multiple production cycles to verify mix consistency, bitumen dosing accuracy, and throughput rates before commercial handover.

The plant achieved its rated 120 TPH output from day one of full commercial operation and has since maintained continuous multi-shift production for the customer's ongoing highway project, recording zero unplanned downtime in the initial three months of operation.

Challenges & How We Addressed Them

The project presented several notable challenges that required careful planning and engineering adaptation:

Extreme Ambient Temperature:  Ambient temperatures at the site regularly exceeded 45°C. Our engineers pre-calibrated the burner system for higher ambient baselines and specified enhanced drum insulation to ensure stable internal drum temperatures and consistent asphalt mix quality throughout the day.

Desert Dust & Filtration Demands:  The site environment contained high concentrations of fine silica-rich desert dust, which imposed heavy loads on the plant's filtration system. We specified a heavy-duty bag filter with expanded filter bag surface area and reinforced housing seals to ensure long filter life and maintain emissions compliance.

International Logistics & Customs:  Shipping a large industrial plant across international borders required meticulous documentation planning. Our team coordinated closely with the customer's local freight and customs agents well in advance of shipment to pre-clear all technical documentation, ensuring smooth port clearance with no delays to the installation schedule.

Remote Site Support:  Given the remote location, we provided comprehensive on-site operator training during commissioning and established a dedicated remote technical support channel, ensuring the customer's team could troubleshoot independently with confidence.

Customer Feedback

The customer expressed strong satisfaction with both the plant's performance and Alfa Omega India's project management and responsiveness throughout the process. Key points of appreciation included:

•       The robust build quality and reliability of the plant in conditions far more demanding than standard operational environments

•       The quality and professionalism of the installation team's on-site work and operator training

•       The intuitive automated control panel, which allowed the customer's operators to manage production efficiently with minimal technical intervention

•       The low-maintenance profile of the plant in the first three months of commercial operation

The customer has expressed intent to explore the procurement of an additional unit for a forthcoming project in the region.

Project Impact

•       Stable 120 TPH output enabled the contractor to meet critical highway project milestones on schedule

•       Desert-adapted engineering eliminated weather-related production disruptions common in arid environments

•       Reduced operational cost through high fuel efficiency and low unplanned maintenance requirements

•       Enhanced the customer's operational capability and confidence for future large-scale projects in the region

With continuous production and consistent performance under some of the most demanding environmental conditions in the region, the plant has proven its reliability and enabled the contractor to maintain project timelines with confidence.
